Square One to Checkmate

Welcome to the Chessboard Kingdom! "Step into an enchanted world full of 64 incredible squares that morph into a battlefield for brains and tactics. Here, in this kingdom, you will be taught how to lead an army of absolutely different pieces, possessing magic and being able to perform feats. Are you ready to become a chess master?" Embark on this incredible quest to discover the hidden treasure of chess—one move at a time.

Rook and Bishop- The straight shooters and diagonal dancers

"Meet the Rook, the castle-shaped piece protecting corners in your kingdom. This fierce piece moves like a laser beam - straight up, down, left, or right, any distance it wishes! The rook's ability to control both ranks and files means it's a strong force for offence and defence." Bishop: "Here comes the Bishop, pointy hat and all. This crafty piece has the diagonal run of the board, staying on the same colour it started. With its far-reaching diagonal moves, the bishop can swoop in on some crucial squares and coordinate well with others."

King and Queen- The Royal Couple

"Bow to the King, the most important piece on the board! Not a very strong piece in itself but it is the most imperative one. Since the motive of the game is to checkmate the opponent's king. He moves diagonally one square at a time, like a wary king surveying his kingdom. Protect him at all costs!" "Now, let's make way for the Queen, the most powerful piece in the game of chess! She combines the powers of the Rook and Bishop, moving in straight lines or diagonals as far as she likes. Think of her like a superhero; because of reach and versatility, it's a key piece in both, attacking and defending positions!".

"Knights and pawns- The horse Hops and Army march!

This guy moves really weirdly in the shape of an 'L'—two squares in one direction, then one square to the side. It is the only piece that can jump over other pieces, very handy in tactical manoeuvres. Visualise it actually leaping over everything like a showjumping horse!" "Do not underestimate the pawn, the fearless foot soldier of your army! He advances only one square at a time, but on his first move, he is allowed to jump two squares! He captures diagonally, one square horizontally, and one row down, like a martial artist striking sideways."

Decoding Royal Language

Chess notation is a way of recording and detailing the moves in a chess game. Now that you know the movement of all the pieces, let’s learn how to do it on paper. By far the most frequently used is algebraic notation, which uses the coordinates of the squares and the initials of the pieces. With that moving and the notational signs at your command, not under any trouble will you be in the process of becoming an expert in playing chess. Happy playing!

Castling, the King's secret exit

Time to learn the King's secret superpower - Castling! This special move gives your King an extra bit of safety by teaming it up with a Rook, sort of a royal escape plan. And again, this is the only move in which you will move two pieces in one turn. Castling has two main reasons: keeping the king safe and bringing the rooks together. You will learn different sides of castling to enrich your game.

Check/ Checkmate and Stalemate. What's the difference?

"Let's unravel the mystery of these similar-sounding chess terms together: Check: Your King is under attack! Like a warning alarm in chess. You must move out of check on your next turn or it's game over for you. Checkmate: The ultimate goal when attacking your opponent. Your King is in check AND can't escape. Game over - you lose! Stalemate: It's your turn, but you have NO legal moves. Your King isn't in check. Results in a draw - nobody wins! Still can't wrap your head around it? The Fine Art of the Draw – When Nobody Wins

Sometimes chess games end in a draw for numerous reasons. Some of them include Stalemate, Mutual Agreement, Threefold Repetition and many more. Getting a headache over these terminologies? Don't know what that means or, how you are going to do it? Hop on this session playing it out for you.

En passant, The tricky pawn move

"En Passant is French for 'in passing' - it's the pawn's secret ninja move! It's like your pawn is saying, 'Nice try, but you can't sneak past me that easily!' Remember: You must use En Passant immediately or lose the chance. Get the know-how to ace this move up in your sleeves.
